Heavy legs in Cannes after a flight: heat, the Croisette, and what drainage can (or cannot) do
A flight to Nice, the heat of Cannes, then the Croisette: the ankles often mark by the evening. A wellness drainage can ease the sensation. It does not treat phlebitis, and swelling on one side only is not for the table.

This article is informative and concerns a wellness practice. It does not replace medical advice, a diagnosis or treatment.
You land at Nice Côte d’Azur, you take the shuttle or a taxi to Cannes, and by the evening your ankles are marked by the edge of your shoe. It is not always the “water retention” the salons talk about. It is often simpler: hours sitting down, a dry cabin, then the heat of the Croisette, the salt at dinner, and too little useful walking. You are looking for lymphatic drainage in Cannes, or a “heavy legs” massage, and you want to know whether it does anything the day after a flight.
I practise drainage in Cannes, including at the hotel and at home. This text is not the Vodder versus Brazilian method comparison. It starts from a place: Cannes, after the plane, in summer or in conference season.
What the flight does, according to the French health insurance, and what I do not do about it
The French health insurance service, on ameli.fr, says clearly that air travel can worsen circulation problems, especially on long or repeated flights, because of sitting still. The advice on board is not a spa protocol: loose clothing, ankle movements, not crossing your legs, walking in the aisle, drinking, avoiding sleeping pills that keep you pinned down for hours. If you already have a venous problem, that is your doctor before departure, not me afterwards.
I do not prescribe stockings. I do not sell compression. I do not promise to prevent a clot. A wellness drainage is not thromboembolic prevention. If someone sells it to you that way, they are outside the framework.
What I can offer, once in Cannes, if nothing raises an alarm: a session that supports the return of fluid, from the extremities towards the nodes, at a pressure your skin accepts. You sometimes urinate more. The legs may feel less heavy in the evening. It is not weight loss, and it is not a treatment for varicose veins.
Heat, the Croisette, a day on your feet
Cannes in August does not help. The ameli page on heavy legs reminds you to avoid exposing the legs to heat, not to stay with the knees bent, to keep the legs stretched out. The tarmac of the Croisette, a terrace, a wedding, a Festival: the same mechanism, without the plane. The ankles mark, by evening the calves weigh, and people type “drainage Cannes” because the word is going round.
Here again, the drainage I practise is a wellness massage. The Cochrane review on manual drainage mainly concerns lymphoedema after breast cancer, in a medical setting, with a cautious conclusion. That is not your Nice to Cannes flight. I do not transfer that review onto a holiday ankle. I only say: the technique exists, it is gentle in its classic version, and the “mirror” effect of a firmer method often rests on fluid that has been moved, and comes back.
Drainage or sports massage, the day after the flight
If the seat has crushed the lower back and the trapezius, and the legs are more or less fine, a light sports massage may be more appropriate than drainage. If the ankles are the reason, and the muscle is not hard, drainage first. Deep work on a calf still marked by six hours on a plane brings nothing good on the same day.
The next day, we reassess. A hike in the Tanneron after the jet lag is no longer “post-flight”: it is effort, and the sports massage finds its logic again, a day or two later.
What is not for the table
One leg only that swells, hurts, feels hot, turns red. A hard calf on one side only. Breathlessness. Chest pain. A phlebitis, even an old one, without medical advice. Heart or kidney failure. A fever. Cancer under treatment without written agreement. This is not a list to frighten you: it is the line between comfort and care. In France, massage for therapeutic purposes belongs to physiotherapists, as the FFMBE points out regarding the 2021 ruling of the Cour de cassation. A suspected thrombosis is a doctor, straight away.
I would rather cancel. So would you, once the story is told.
Where to do it, once in Cannes
The airport is not Cannes. The road takes as long as it takes. If you are staying on the Croisette, I come to the hotel. If you are in a villa in Le Cannet or Mougins, at home, with the table. After the session, the best thing is usually to stay lying down, legs slightly raised, and drink. Getting straight back into an Uber undoes part of the work.
My private space in Cannes remains an option if you prefer to go out, and if driving does not weigh on you. After a long-haul flight, many people choose not to move again. That is a criterion for choosing the place, not a marketing argument.
What you can do without me
The ameli pages on heavy legs and venous health are worth more, day to day, than a one-off session: walking, legs stretched out, less direct heat, compression only if it has been prescribed for you. After landing, ten minutes of walking in the terminal before the taxi do not replace a drainage; they cost less, and they are in the official guidance.
The drainage you book afterwards, if you book it, is added to that. It does not replace it.
From Nice to Cannes, the body has not finished yet
The airport is called Nice Côte d’Azur. Your search says Cannes. The road, the motorway, the Palm Bus or the taxi: another hour sitting down, sometimes more at Festival time. Ankles that were more or less fine on arrival often mark by the evening, once in the room. It is not “Cannes making you swell”. It is the sitting that carries on.
If you land late, a session that same evening is not compulsory. Sleeping, drinking, legs stretched out are better than an eleven o’clock slot. The next morning, or late morning, drainage has more room. If you only have one night in Cannes, we can do the evening, light, not a contouring session.
The hotels near the airport, in Saint-Laurent-du-Var, are not my usual territory. Cannes, Le Cannet, Mougins, Antibes, yes. A hotel in central Nice, case by case, if the journey works. This is not “the whole Coast” coverage. It is a radius within which I arrive with the table in a reasonable time.
What I actually do, once there
An hour and a half. We talk about the flight, what has swollen, what is pulling elsewhere. I open the lymph node areas first, then the legs, sometimes the abdomen if you ask and nothing contraindicates it. On the face, I stay gentle. The pressure of a “Brazilian” method is not the reflex after a long-haul flight: the skin and the vessels do not need spectacular pumping. If you want the mirror effect before a dinner, we talk about it, and I tell you what will come back within forty-eight hours.
You leave with a short instruction: stay lying down for a while, drink, do not follow it with an evening on your feet if you can avoid it. It is not a medical protocol. It is common sense, in line with what ameli already describes for the legs.
When you write, one sentence is enough: “flight of such length, arrival at such time, hotel or home, ankles or back”. If one leg does not look like the other, say so beforehand. We do not massage to find out.

Frequently asked questions
Does lymphatic drainage help heavy legs after a flight?
It can ease the sensation of heaviness and mild swelling, especially the day after a long flight, if nothing raises an alarm. It is not a venous treatment, nor prevention of phlebitis. The French health insurance reminds you first to move on the plane, to drink, and to consult if you have a known venous problem.
When should I have a massage after landing in Nice?
Not in the airport car park, and not at deep pressure on the same day if the calves are hard. A light drainage session, that evening or the next day in Cannes, makes more sense. Deep sports massage usually waits twenty-four hours, unless only the back has paid for the seat.
Heavy legs in Cannes: drainage or sports massage?
If it is the ankles, the heat, the flight, standing up: drainage, rather. If it is the calves and hamstrings after a hike or a bike ride, sports massage comes back into its own. Both can be discussed; there is no single protocol.
One leg swollen after the plane, can I still come?
No. A leg that swells, hurts, feels hot, turns red, or breathlessness: that is medical advice, not drainage. I practise a wellness massage. Phlebitis is not massaged.
Is post-flight drainage reimbursed in Cannes?
My sessions are not. Only drainage prescribed and carried out by a physiotherapist, in a care setting, can be. After a flight, with no underlying condition, you come for comfort, not for medical care.
Can the session be done at a hotel near the airport or in Cannes?
Yes, in Cannes, Le Cannet, Mougins, Antibes, at the hotel or at home, with the table. After a flight, staying lying down afterwards is often better than getting straight back in the car, which is the point of the home visit.
Is the heat of Cannes in August enough to explain swollen ankles?
It contributes, along with standing up and the salt at dinner. It is not a diagnosis. If it lasts, if only one leg is affected, or if you have known varicose veins, talk to your doctor. Wellness drainage does not replace that appointment.
